MDSUN Super Hydration B Serum Review By FutureDerm Part 2

October 24, 2018

My skin has gone through a lot this year. Between pregnancy, labor and delivery, late nights with the baby, running a business, and now the changes in the weather here on the East Coast, it’s been a lot. I’m noticing dryness and sunspots. That’s why I was excited to reintroduce myself to MDSUN Super Hydration B Serum — and to share it with my readers.

Enriched with sodium hyaluronate and pro-vitamin B5, this medical-grade serum promises to diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles and improves uneven skin tone, leaving skin significantly more radiant, plumped and healthy. In addition, it also delivers deep hydration and water retention. For more, read on!

Sodium Hyaluronate is a Natural Moisturizing Factor that Packs a Big Punch

One of my favorite skincare ingredients is sodium hyaluronate, which is one of the natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) found in the skin. NMFs keep skin from losing water, maintaining skin’s young, smooth, non-flaky appearance. In fact, a 2000 study by Sakai et. al found that a decrease in the lipid and NMF content of the skin leads to surface roughness, flaking, fine lines, and a tight, uncomfortable feeling.

NMFs maintain moisture in the skin, even under low humidity, and provide an optimal environment for enzymatic functions (Baumann). Within the skin, biologically-formed NMFs are made of amino acids and their metabolites, and are found exclusively inside the cells of the uppermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum).

When applied to the skin, topically-applied natural moisturizing factors are able to draw water into the skin, reducing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and creating a slight swelling of the skin that reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

NMFs in skincare products also help to temporarily stabilize and maintain the complex intercellular-skin matrix, which is the “glue” that holds the skin together; this gives skin a smoother appearance (Begoun). Therefore, NMFs are often included in “anti-wrinkle” and “anti-aging” products, but they improve the appearance of the skin on a temporary basis more than they provide actual long-term correction of the skin, like retinoids.

NMFs are also important for anti-aging prevention, as, according to Dr. Howard Murad, hydration of the skin with NMFs allows the skin to operate at optimum capacity, and provides a better defense against environmental assaults.

Panthenol May Reduce the Appearance of Signs of Aging, and Draws in Moisture from the Environment

Panthenol is an alcohol made out of panthenolic acid, or pro-vitamin B5.

Several studies done on mice show that panthenolic acid increases the production of cell fibroblasts. It’s effective in aiding wound healing and for this reason has been shown to work well in anti-aging products (Drug & Cosmetic Industry). In a study on 30-60 year old women, a combination of panthenol and Niacinamide

The high-pH version of vitamin B3. Improves mild to moderate acne and signs of aging, such as hyperpigmentation.Niacinamide (Wikipedia)

Nicotinamide, (ni-kə-tē-nə-mīd) also known as niacinamide and nicotinic amide, is the amide of nicotinic acid (vitamin B3 / niacin). Nicotinamide is a water-soluble vitamin and is part of the vitamin B group. Nicotinic acid, also known as niacin, is converted to nicotinamide in vivo, and, though the two are identical in their vitamin functions, nicotinamide does not have the same pharmacological and toxic effects of niacin, which occur incidental to niacin’s conversion. Thus nicotinamide does not reduce cholesterol or cause flushing, although nicotinamide may be toxic to the liver at doses exceeding 3 g/day for adults. In cells, niacin is incorporated into nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), although the pathways for nicotinic acid amide and nicotinic acid are very similar. NAD+ and NADP+ are coenzymes in a wide variety of enzymatic oxidation-reduction reactions. Commercial production of niacin and niacinamide (several thousand tons annually) is by hydrolysis or aminolysis of 3-cyanopyridine (nicotinonitrile).and niacinamide improved signs of aging, such as hyperpigmentation and redness (Indian Journal of Dermatology).

Panthenol additionally coats skin and hair as a humectant moisturizer — which means that it draws in moisture from the environment (International Journal of Cosmetic Science). But because these moisturizers can also pull moisture from the lower levels of skin, it’s beneficial to use them in combination with an occlusive moisturizer, like the glycerin in MDSUN Super Hydration B Serum.

Personal Use and Opinions

MDSUN Super Hydration B Serum is a lightweight serum. It is clear, unscented, and glides across the skin very easily. One drop from the supplied dropper goes a long way. It absorbs into the skin quickly.

I really like MDSUN Super Hydration B Serum. In the winter, I feel like my skin is dry at times, and this serum perked it right up. I’ve been testing a lot of concentrated scrubs, serums, peels, and masques recently, and I found this to be the perfect “drink” my skin needed to get it back to normalcy. I loved it!

How to Use

After cleansing, toning, and exfoliating, gently apply a few drops over the entire face and neck. Gently massage for complete absorption.

Bottom Line

MDSUN Super Hydration B Serum is the first product I’ve found on the market with two actives as the most concentrated ingredients — there is more sodium hyaluronate and panthenol in this product than water — and, as a result, it is very hydrating and gives quick short-term wrinkle-filling and dryness-fighting effects, and long-term wrinkle-fighting effects. I really like this serum, and I think it’s an excellent addition to a skin care regimen with concentrated, well-proven ingredients embedded in products with low-neutral pH levels and optimized absorption systems. I’m a HUGE fan of this one!
